Chiropractic healthcare is a branch of the healing arts based on the scientific fact that our nervous system controls or influences the function of every cell in our body. Interference to the nervous system (caused by the Vertebral Subluxation Complex or Nerve Impingement Syndrome) will affect how the nervous system relates to the cells to which it travels.
The term “Chiropractic” comes from the Greek words “cheiro and praktikos” meaning “done by hand.” The Chiropractic model of health is centered on the philosophy that the human body, being knit together in a wonderful way, will heal itself given the right opportunity and circumstances. Doctors of Chiropractic essentially promote the healing process by minimizing nerve interference.
Nerve Impingement Syndrome (NIS), or a Subluxation, occurs when a misalignment of one or more of the joints in the spine places pressure on a nerve. Nerves communicate from the brain through the spinal cord and nervous system. Pressure on the nerves can cause interference with the transmitted signal. This can cause pain and/or discomfort, as well as other symptoms.
First, our doctors will engage in a one-on-one conversation with you to determine your medical history and the possible causes of your problem. The adjustment and treatment procedures then can be customized to fit each patient’s needs.
The next step in evaluation and treatment is to utilize the sophisticated computerized analysis to pinpoint the problem areas on each region of the spine,(cervical, thoracic, lumbosacral ). The information is then charted graphically on a computer monitor, so your doctor can detect the problem areas on each and every visit.
Your doctor will now begin treatment with the sigma instrument. By applying the Sigma Instrument resonant force impulses precisely to the affected areas, you will receive gentle, effective treatment to that specific area, thereby reducing the subluxation. This will relieve the pressure on the nerve, allow the nerve to heal and restore the nerve’s ability to transmit signals to and from the brain more freely. Most importantly, it will help relieve the pain! In addition, your doctor may again take the readings after the adjustment with the Sigma Instrument to compare the results. That’s putting analysis on a whole new level!
The SIGMA Instrument virtually puts all the fears of manual treatment to rest. The SIGMA Instrument utilizes a precise oscillating force with uninterrupted motion. It is able to increase mobility of the spinal segments by reducing or eliminating the fixations. It uses soft tips, that are comfortable to the human body to exert a tapping force that “unsticks” the joint.
Soft Tissue conditions such as triggerpoints respond well to the percussion forces of SIGMA Instrument. The forces are delivered in a sub-harmonic, metered, precise nature to create oscillation and enhance range of motion.
Neurologically, the SIGMA Instrument takes advantage of the interplay of the type 1, 2, and 3 mechanreceptors with the type 4 nociceptors creating an inhibition of pain, increasing neuroactivity and restoration of normal nervous system tone.
The SIGMA Instrument is very comforable for patients of all ages due to the fact that there is no application of manual rotation or thrusting forces.
The patient is treated in a comfortable way without the need to turn or hyperextend parts of the body, head or neck. Thus this greatly reduces any issues associated with osteoporosis, vertebral artery conditions or other concerns that more aggressive techniques might not address.
This technique is the most commonly used of all chiropractic techniques and is the one probably most familiar to patients. The diversified manipulation/adjustment entails a high velocity, low-amplitude thrust delivered by hand, or possibly with assistance from a table or block. This usually results in “ cavitation” of a joint. (quick, shallow thrusts that cause the “popping” noise often associated with a chiropractic manipulation/adjustment). As the name implies, the Diversified Technique can be used to treat many of the joints in the body.
The old adage of “I went to my chiropractor and he put me back in place” is not what happens with the adjustment. Joints rarely “go out of place.” Instead, the adjustment is designed to restore normal joint and neurologic function to the area that is being addressed. With restored function comes pain relief and a decrease in symptoms.
Activator Method This is a hand-held, spring-loaded instrument-based manipulation/adjustment protocol. Instead of the manipulating/adjusting forces being delivered by hand, force is generated with the small appliance that delivers a lighter, but quicker, thrust than can be delivered by hand. In our office, Activator is most often used as a selective method for patients who may not desire manual manipulation/adjustment or where manual manipulation/adjustment may be contraindicated.
